   Teaching English literacy with literature.
Just in time for the holidays -- and the new Jim Carrey movie -- we are presenting 16 lessons drawn from the first chapter of Charles Dickens' seasonal classic, "A Christmas Carol".

The lessons are tiered, so that the first few have very short reading passages and they get progressively longer. This helps overcome the "first few pages effect" and prevents students being overwhelmed by too much new vocabulary while they build background knowledge.

We were inspired to take this approach after reading Steve Krashen's ideas on "Narrow Reading"The idea of "Narrow Reading" is that  familiarity with a single writer builds background knowledge and provides repetition of words, phrases, and grammar, leading to greater comprehension. Our hope is that these lessons will make it easier for your students to enjoy "A Christmas Carol" as much we do. And please let us know what you think.

Happy Holidays from LessonWriter
